Assumption Welcomes Back Goats

Assumption students have excitedly welcomed a new semester and some familiar friends – the professional lawnmower-goats from Mapledell Farm in Townsend, Massachusetts.
A statement from Assumption’s Instagram page describes how “a herd of goats can be an extremely effective and environmentally-friendly method of clearing undesirable vegetation from wooded areas of our campus! Plus, they’re super cute!”
Goat grazing is an effective sustainable practice that ensures the removal of intrusive species, the protection of livestock welfare, the promotion of biodiversity, and a lower carbon footprint from fuel emissions. According to Anything Agriculture, “Goat grazing is not only economically sustainable but also promotes animal health, wellness, and longevity. Additionally, it provides an effective solution for weed and brush control.” Benefitting the goats, the University, and the students as a larger community – even if only to make us smile – this alternative beautifully reflects Assumption’s mission for living in the company of friends and honoring the dignity of all forms of life.
Students should be reminded to exercise caution when approaching the goat’s enclosure. Their fences are electrified, and touching goats that have been feeding on poisonous vegetation could result in rashes or other side effects. Enjoy them from a distance, and let their presence resonate as an example of environmental ethics in practice!
